The Round About

We want to empower organizations to achieve balance in the Decade of Action. An essential part of meeting this goal is sharing knowledge outside our organizational boundaries. With our brand new client event ‘The Round About’, we bring people together who are working on the same challenges, creating a platform to accelerate sustainable development. During this event, we invite clients from different sectors to share opinions, experiences, and valuable insights on various topics that are relevant today in the field of sustainability.

Join our brand new client event!

Every 3 to 4 months, our consultants will host The Round About. What about? You decide! Are there any sustainability challenges you’d like to address and discuss with peers? Don’t hesitate to let us know by suggesting a topic via the form below on your right.

#01 Employee Engagement

On Tuesday, the 28th of September 2021, The (very first) Round About took place in CIRCL (Amsterdam Zuid, Netherlands)! The theme of this edition was employee engagement. How to continuously engage your employees on sustainability matters to reach your sustainability goals? This was the central question we discussed with our clients within the agri-food sector, and with Elisa Olvera (Senior Consultant at The Fifth Business) as our guest speaker.

Listen here to our Walk the Talk podcast on The Round About – Employee Engagement.

#02 Making (the use of) premises Fit for 55

On Tuesday, the 29th of March 2022, the second edition of our client event The Round About took place in CIRCL on EU’s Fit for 55 package and its consequences for the buildings sector. This extensive package includes new and revised legislative proposals from the EU to reach the ambitious Green Deal target of climate neutrality in 2050 and specifically the intermediate target of 55% reduction (compared to 1990) in 2030. Achieving these goals means additional effort from – amongst others – the buildings sector; from increasing the share of renewables (Renewable Energy Directive – RED) to increasing energy efficiency (Energy Efficiency Directive – EED).

One of the core challenges raised was the shared ownership of both buildings and data. Many opportunities were discussed as well, such as creating awareness on the costs of energy and potential reductions for tenants and/or involving an external third party who manages the energy use and stands between the landlord and tenant; the more energy the third party can reduce, the more profits it can make from these savings!

Many thanks to Rob van der Hage (Partner Offshore Renewables and Hydrogen at ERM) for setting the scene on developments in the renewable energy sector specified at wind and hydrogen, Stefan Eenhuizen (Owner of Beyond Energy) for providing practical insights on how to save energy, and Arjan van Eijk (Head of Sustainability at Colliers) for discussing this interesting case with us!

#03 Business and Human Rights

Celebrating International Human Rights Day, we organized The Round About with the theme ‘Business and Human Rights’ on December 8th. This topic is particularly relevant due to the forthcoming EU and Dutch regulatory obligations for human rights due diligence. Rising stakeholder awareness of human rights risks among investors, customers, workers, and communities will impact firms’ access to funding, markets, talent, and license to operate. New duties for directors will raise board-level attention to considering human rights in decision-making and strategy, and to implementing appropriate human rights processes.

During the day we sketched the current landscape and presented a research on the readiness of companies to comply with the upcoming human rights due diligence legislation. Several companies shared their experiences through an interesting panel discussion. After that, all participants had a round table conversation in groups, where they discussed experiences and examples around three topics: the supply chain, own operations and grievance mechanism.

A special thanks to Margriet Rouhof (Head of Strategy, TenneT), Jennifer Greenop (Human Rights Specialist, SBM Offshore), and Kees Gootjes (Business and Human Rights Advisor, ABN AMRO) for openly sharing more about their human rights journey!
