On Tuesday, the 29th of March 2022, the second edition of our client event The Round About took place in CIRCL on EU’s Fit for 55 package and its consequences for the buildings sector. This extensive package includes new and revised legislative proposals from the EU to reach the ambitious Green Deal target of climate neutrality in 2050 and specifically the intermediate target of 55% reduction (compared to 1990) in 2030. Achieving these goals means additional effort from – amongst others – the buildings sector; from increasing the share of renewables (Renewable Energy Directive – RED) to increasing energy efficiency (Energy Efficiency Directive – EED).
One of the core challenges raised was the shared ownership of both buildings and data. Many opportunities were discussed as well, such as creating awareness on the costs of energy and potential reductions for tenants and/or involving an external third party who manages the energy use and stands between the landlord and tenant; the more energy the third party can reduce, the more profits it can make from these savings!
Many thanks to Rob van der Hage (Partner Offshore Renewables and Hydrogen at ERM) for setting the scene on developments in the renewable energy sector specified at wind and hydrogen, Stefan Eenhuizen (Owner of Beyond Energy) for providing practical insights on how to save energy, and Arjan van Eijk (Head of Sustainability at Colliers) for discussing this interesting case with us!
